Karuizawa and Kitakaruizawa — Two Places, Two Prefectures, One History

When you hear the name “Karuizawa,” you may think of a beautiful mountain resort in Nagano Prefecture.

But did you know that there is another place called Kitakaruizawa, and it is actually located in Gunma Prefecture?

Although the names are very similar, Karuizawa and Kitakaruizawa are in different prefectures. Both areas are located around the foot of Mount Asama, and they share an interesting history connected to the development of mountain resorts and the old Kusakaru Electric Railway.

Karuizawa in Nagano Prefecture

Karuizawa is located in eastern Nagano Prefecture and has long been known as of Japan's famous mountain resort areas.

The modern history of Karuizawa as a resort began in the late 19th century. After the area became known as a pleasant summer retreat, visitors from Japan and overseas began building villas and spending their summers here.

Today, Karuizawa is known for its forests, cool summer climate, restaurants, shopping, villas, and beautiful natural surroundings.

However, the history of the area extends beyond what we now call Karuizawa.

What is Kitakaruizawa?

Kitakaruizawa is located in Naganohara Town, Gunma Prefecture, on the northern side of Mount Asama.

The name can be confusing for visitors because “Kitakaruizawa” sounds as if it should be part of Karuizawa in Nagano.

Historically, the area had another name, and the development of the region was connected with the establishment of resort communities and villas.

The area also became associated with Hosei University Village, which was established in the early Showa period.

Today, Kitakaruizawa is known for its quiet natural environment, forests, villas, and the beautiful scenery around Mount Asama.

The Kusakaru Electric Railway

One of the most fascinating connections between Karuizawa and Kitakaruizawa is the Kusakaru Electric Railway.

The railway connected the Karuizawa area with Kusatsu in Gunma Prefecture.

Construction and operation began in the early 20th century, and the complete route eventually connected Shin-Karuizawa with Kusatsu.

The railway played an important role in transporting people and goods through this mountainous region.

At that time, traveling through the mountains was much more difficult than it is today. The railway helped connect communities and contributed to the development of the surrounding resort areas.

The Kusakaru Electric Railway eventually closed in 1961.

Although the railway itself has disappeared, traces of its history can still be found in several places.

The Former Kitakaruizawa Station

One of those important historical remains is the former Kitakaruizawa Station building.

The station building still stands in Kitakaruizawa today and gives visitors a glimpse into the history of the old railway.

The building has a distinctive Japanese-Western architectural style and is also connected to the history of Hosei University Village.

It is a valuable reminder of a time when a small railway connected mountain communities between Karuizawa and Kusatsu.

I recently visited the former station building and filmed photographs and video of the building and its surroundings.

Standing there, it is easy to imagine what this area must have looked like when the Kusakaru Electric Railway was still operating.

Two Karuizawas Around Mount Asama

For people visiting the region for the first time, the relationship between Karuizawa and Kitakaruizawa can be confusing.

Karuizawa is in Nagano Prefecture, while Kitakaruizawa is in Gunma Prefecture.

They are different places, but both are closely connected geographically and historically.

Mount Asama stands between and around these communities, and the mountain has played an important role in shaping the landscape and culture of the region.

Today, visitors can enjoy forests, mountains, villas, local food, hiking, and quiet rural scenery in both areas.

For me, this is of the interesting things about traveling around Shinshu and the surrounding areas: sometimes a place that seems familiar has a completely different history you look a little deeper.

Discovering the History Around Karuizawa

Karuizawa is famous throughout Japan, but there are many lesser-known places around it that are worth exploring.

Kitakaruizawa is of them.

The former Kusakaru Electric Railway station is not simply an old building. It is a small piece of history that tells us about transportation, tourism, resort development, and everyday life in the mountains of Japan.

I would like to continue introducing these lesser-known places through Toshin Shinshu Local Life, together with local nature, food, history, rescue cats, relocation information, and real estate.

If you are interested in discovering a quieter and more local side of Japan, I hope you will explore the areas around Karuizawa and Mount Asama with me.
