When you visit Karuizawa, you may think of beautiful forests, Mount Asama, elegant villas, and popular tourist destinations.
But there are also many quiet places where you can experience the everyday beauty of Shinshu.
One of these places is the Mikage Irrigation Canal, which flows through Karuizawa and Miyota in Nagano Prefecture, Japan.
Recently, I visited the canal and saw several ducks swimming peacefully in the clear water.
It was a simple scene, but I found it incredibly beautiful.
Beautiful, Clear Water
One of the first things I noticed was how clean and clear the water looked.
The ducks were swimming comfortably along the canal, sometimes moving together and sometimes stopping quietly on the water.
The sound of the flowing water, the surrounding trees, and the birds created a very peaceful atmosphere.

There was nothing spectacular or artificial about the scene.
It was simply nature and everyday life.
I believe that these quiet moments are an important part of the charm of rural Japan.
More Than 350 Years of History
The Mikage Irrigation Canal has a long history.
It was developed around 1650 during the Edo period to provide water for agricultural land.
Today, the waterway extends through the Karuizawa, Miyota, Saku, and Komoro areas and continues to support agriculture in the region.
For more than 350 years, this water has been connected to the lives and livelihoods of local people.

When you learn about this history, the canal becomes much more than just a beautiful stream of water.
It becomes part of the history and culture of the region.
A Peaceful Place for Walking and Jogging
The areas along the Mikage Irrigation Canal are also pleasant for walking and jogging.
You can walk beside the flowing water while enjoying the natural scenery around the foothills of Mount Asama.
It is especially nice for people who prefer quiet places rather than crowded tourist attractions.
You can simply walk, listen to the water, watch the birds, and enjoy the changing seasons.
This is of the experiences I would like to share with people visiting Japan from overseas.
Discovering the Real Japan
Japan is famous for Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and many other major destinations.
Of course, these places are wonderful.
But there is another Japan that I would like to introduce.
It is the Japan of quiet roads, local waterways, small towns, forests, fields, local food, and ordinary everyday life.
The Mikage Irrigation Canal is a small example of this quieter side of Japan.
It connects Karuizawa with the surrounding communities and reminds us that local life and nature are closely connected.
From Karuizawa to the Toshin Region
Karuizawa is a wonderful starting point for exploring the Toshin region of Nagano.
From Karuizawa and Miyota, you can continue to Saku, Komoro, Tomi, Ueda, and other parts of eastern Nagano.
Each town has its own history, food, nature, and local character.
Through Toshin Shinshu Local Life, I want to introduce these places to people around the world.
I share local scenery, food, nature, rescue cats, everyday life, relocation information, and real estate in the region.
I hope these stories will help you discover a different side of Japan.
Watch the Video
I also recorded a video of the Mikage Irrigation Canal.
You can see the ducks swimming in the clear water and hear the peaceful sounds of the waterway.
If you visit Karuizawa or Miyota, I hope you will take some time to explore places like this.
Sometimes, the most memorable part of a trip is not a famous tourist attraction.
It may simply be a quiet walk beside a beautiful canal.
