Why I Want to Introduce Karuizawa and Eastern Nagano to the World

When people think about Japan, they often think of Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, or Mount Fuji.

But Japan has another side.

There are quiet mountain towns, forests, rivers, local restaurants, traditional communities, and beautiful places where people can enjoy a slower pace of life.

One of the places I would like people around the world to discover is Karuizawa and the eastern part of Nagano Prefecture, known as Toshin.

So, why Karuizawa?

A Mountain Resort Just About Hour from Tokyo

One of the biggest attractions of Karuizawa is its location.

Karuizawa is surrounded by mountains and forests, yet it is accessible from Tokyo by the Hokuriku Shinkansen in about hour.

For me, this is of the special things about the area.

You can leave of the world's largest cities and, in a relatively short time, arrive in a quiet mountain environment.

It is close to Tokyo, but it feels completely different.

Nature and a More Comfortable Summer

Karuizawa is located at an elevation of around 1,000 meters.

The area is surrounded by forests and mountains, and its summer climate is generally cooler than that of many major Japanese cities.

As summers become hotter in many parts of the world, I believe places where people can enjoy nature and a more comfortable summer environment will become increasingly attractive.

Karuizawa is not simply a tourist destination.

For many people, it is also a place to spend time, relax, work remotely, enjoy a second home, or build a different lifestyle.

How Can a Mountain Town Attract Wealthy People?

This is of the things that makes Karuizawa particularly interesting.

At first glance, Karuizawa may look like a quiet rural mountain town.

But it has developed into of Japan's best-known resort destinations.

People from Tokyo and other major cities come here to enjoy the forests, villas, restaurants, hotels, golf, shopping, and the natural environment.

Karuizawa has also become well known as a destination for affluent visitors and second-home owners.

This combination is unusual.

It is a mountain environment, but it is also a place with a strong brand, accessibility, and a long history as a resort.

Karuizawa as a Real Estate Destination

For me, another important part of Karuizawa is real estate.

Karuizawa is not a place to visit.

It is also a place where people purchase villas, land, and second homes.

The value of Karuizawa real estate is not based on the size of a property.

Location, surrounding nature, accessibility, history, the Karuizawa name, and the lifestyle associated with the area all contribute to its appeal.

Recent Japanese land and real estate assessments also show continued demand in some of Karuizawa's established villa areas.

This does not mean that every property will increase in value.

However, it shows why Karuizawa continues to attract people who see a property not as a place to stay, but also as a long-term asset connected to of Japan's best-known mountain resort brands.

A Real Example: A 674-Tsubo Property in Sengataki

To give you a more concrete idea of what Karuizawa real estate can look like, I would like to introduce property in Sengataki, of Karuizawa's well-known villa areas.

The property is approximately 674 tsubo, or about 2,229 square meters.

It is a large piece of land surrounded by the natural environment of Karuizawa.

The asking price is ¥108 million.

For someone living outside Japan, the price can be easier to understand when converted into another currency. At an exchange rate of around ¥158 to the US dollar, ¥108 million is approximately US$680,000.

Exchange rates change, of course, but this gives overseas readers a rough idea of the scale.

I also filmed a video of this property and its surroundings.

What interests me is not simply the property itself.

It is the location.

Imagine owning a large piece of land surrounded by the forests of Karuizawa, while still being a relatively short journey from Tokyo.

This is way to understand why Karuizawa has attracted second-home buyers and affluent visitors for generations.

Beyond Karuizawa — Discovering Toshin

Karuizawa is the beginning.

The eastern part of Nagano Prefecture, known as Toshin, includes areas such as Miyota, Saku, Komoro, Tomi, and Ueda.

Each area has its own character.

There are mountains, rivers, farms, local food, historic towns, traditional communities, and beautiful countryside.

Living and working in this region has made me realize that there is much more to Japan than the famous destinations seen in travel guides.

This is the Japan I want to introduce.

Not the Japan that tourists visit, but also the Japan where people live.

Why I Share This

I want people overseas to discover that Japan has many different ways of living.

Tokyo has its energy.

Kyoto has its history.

Osaka has its food and lively culture.

And Karuizawa and Eastern Nagano have something different.

Mountains, forests, clean air, cooler summers, local communities, beautiful homes, and a slower pace of life — while still being relatively close to Tokyo.

For me, that combination is what makes this region special.

I hope to continue introducing Karuizawa and the wider Toshin area through local scenery, food, history, rescue cats, everyday life, relocation information, and real estate.

なぜ私は軽井沢・長野県東信地域を紹介するのか

日本と聞くと、多くの外国人の方は東京、京都、大阪、富士山などを思い浮かべると思います。

しかし、日本にはもう一つの魅力があります。

山や森、川、地元の飲食店、昔ながらの地域社会、そして都会とは違ったゆっくりとした暮らしを楽しめる場所です。

私が海外の方にぜひ知ってもらいたい場所の一つが、軽井沢と長野県東部の東信地域です。

では、なぜ軽井沢なのでしょうか。

東京から約1時間の山のリゾート

軽井沢の大きな魅力の一つは、その立地です。

軽井沢は山と森に囲まれていますが、北陸新幹線を利用すれば東京から約1時間でアクセスできます。

私は、この近さが軽井沢の大きな魅力だと思っています。

世界有数の大都市である東京を離れて、比較的短い時間で静かな山の環境に行くことができます。

東京から近いのに、まったく違う空気を感じることができる場所です。

豊かな自然と過ごしやすい夏

軽井沢は標高約1,000mの高原にあります。

周囲には森や山が広がり、日本の大都市と比べると夏も比較的涼しい地域です。

世界的に夏の暑さが厳しくなっている現在、自然の中で、より過ごしやすい夏を楽しめる場所は、これからさらに魅力を増していくのではないかと私は考えています。

軽井沢は単なる観光地ではありません。

ゆっくり過ごす場所、仕事をする場所、別荘を持つ場所、そして新しい暮らしを始める場所としても選ばれています。

なぜ山の町に富裕層が集まるのか

これは軽井沢の非常に面白いところです。

一見すると、軽井沢は静かな山の田舎町です。

しかし、現在では日本を代表するリゾート地の一つとして知られています。

東京などの都市部から、多くの人が森、別荘、レストラン、ホテル、ゴルフ、ショッピング、そして自然を楽しむために訪れます。

また、富裕層の旅行先やセカンドハウスの場所としても知られています。

「山の中」という環境でありながら、強いブランド力、交通アクセス、そして長いリゾートの歴史を持っている。

この組み合わせは、軽井沢ならではの魅力だと思います。

不動産という視点から見る軽井沢

私にとって、軽井沢のもう一つの重要な魅力が不動産です。

軽井沢は単に訪れる場所ではありません。

別荘、土地、セカンドハウスなどを購入する場所でもあります。

もちろん、すべての不動産の価格が上昇するという意味ではありません。

しかし、軽井沢が単なる滞在場所ではなく、日本を代表する山岳リゾートブランドと結びついた長期的な資産として検討されている理由は、ここにあると思います。

具体例として見る千ヶ滝674坪の土地

軽井沢の不動産がどのようなものなのか、具体的に感じてもらうために、軽井沢の代表的な別荘地の一つである千ヶ滝の土地を紹介します。

この土地は約**674坪、約2,229㎡**あります。

軽井沢の自然に囲まれた広い土地です。

販売価格は1億800万円。

海外の方にもイメージしていただきやすいように、現在の為替レートを約1ドル＝158円として換算すると、約68万ドルになります。

もちろん為替レートは変動しますので、あくまで現在の為替による目安です。

今回は、この土地と周辺の様子を動画でも撮影しました。

私が興味深いと思うのは、単にこの土地そのものではありません。

重要なのは、その「場所」です。

軽井沢の森に囲まれた広い土地を所有しながら、東京からも比較的短時間でアクセスできる。

これが、長年にわたって軽井沢がセカンドハウスの購入者や富裕層から選ばれてきた理由の一つだと思います。

軽井沢の先にある東信

そして、軽井沢は東信地域の入口でもあります。

長野県東部の東信地域には、御代田町、佐久市、小諸市、東御市、上田市などがあります。

それぞれに違った魅力があります。

山、川、農地、地元の食、歴史ある町、地域の暮らし、美しい田園風景。

実際にこの地域で暮らし、仕事をしていると、旅行ガイドには載っていない日本の魅力がまだまだたくさんあることに気づきます。

私は、そんな日本を海外の方に紹介したいと思っています。

観光客が訪れる日本だけではなく、人々が実際に暮らしている日本です。

なぜ私はこの地域を紹介するのか

私は海外の方に、日本にはさまざまな暮らし方があることを知ってもらいたいと思っています。

東京には東京の魅力があります。

京都には歴史があります。

大阪には食と活気があります。

そして軽井沢と東信地域には、また違った魅力があります。

山、森、きれいな空気、比較的涼しい夏、地域のコミュニティ、美しい住宅、そして都会とは違ったゆっくりとした時間。

それでいて東京から比較的近い。

この組み合わせこそが、私がこの地域を特別だと感じる理由です。

これからも私は、軽井沢を中心に、東信地域の自然、グルメ、歴史、地域の暮らし、保護猫、移住、そして不動産について紹介していきたいと思います。
